Do it yourself

Materials, from dated retail prices. Your time: about hours.

      Hire a pro

Paint, materials and labor, from published national averages. Typically 3–5 days for an average kitchen.

        Ask before you hire

        • Are the doors and drawer fronts sprayed?
        • What coating system, and how many coats?
        • How are surfaces cleaned and prepped?
        • If the home was built before 1978: is the firm EPA Lead-Safe Certified?

        Safety

Lead paint (homes built before 1978). Sanding old paint can release lead dust. Under the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule, contractors paid to disturb paint in pre-1978 homes generally must be Lead-Safe Certified and follow lead-safe practices. If you do it yourself, test first. EPA RRP program
Flammable solvents. Shellac-based primer is alcohol-based and highly flammable; Rust-Oleum's U.S. safety data sheet for Zinsser B-I-N lists a flash point of 17°C (about 63°F). Turn off pilot lights and the stove and keep sparks and flames out of the room. B-I-N safety data sheet
Ventilation. Keep fresh air moving while you prime, paint and while coats dry, and follow the product label for respirator use. Read the data sheet for every product you buy.

        How these estimates work

These are researched national averages from published cost guides and retailer prices, not SheenWise's own prices or quotes. Real quotes vary with your kitchen, your painter and your area.

        • Pro: $70–$125 per door and $30–$110 per drawer front (HomeGuide, Fixr); $75–$150 per cabinet box (Fixr). Raised-panel and glass doors use the upper half of the door range, our assumption since guides say detailed doors take longer. Angi publishes a higher $100–$250 per door.
        • Poor condition adds $120–$600 for repairs (HomeGuide). A full-kitchen job is floored at $1,000, the low end Fixr and HomeGuide publish for a small kitchen.
        • Whole-kitchen totals published by the guides: Fixr $2,500–$6,500; HomeGuide $2,000–$6,500; Angi $425–$1,467.
        • Regional labor factor: your state's median annual wage for painters, construction and maintenance (SOC 47-2141) divided by the national median ($49,400), applied to the labor share (80%, from HomeGuide, Fixr and Angi) only. Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS May 2025. Wages are a rough proxy for local labor costs, not contractor rates.
        • DIY: one gallon of primer, one to three gallons of enamel depending on how many doors and drawer fronts you have (Fixr: one to two gallons for an average kitchen), plus supplies. DIY hours scale from published averages of 20–60 hours (Angi, HomeGuide). Published DIY material totals run $200–$600.
